Deirdre brought the little guy in and I knew he was staying. He smiled at me with his split lip and cut on his cheek and asked if he could sit on a bike. He sat on every fuckin’ bike here, played on the trike while I was working on Sheila's bike, talked to Trapper about his dog, and now he's helping Alex by holding screws while Alex takes a bike apart. He's fuckin’ cute as hell and makes me laugh. Everything is exciting and everyone he meets is a new friend.

I bring a container over to Alex and have Brandon drop the screws in it. “Let's go get lunch.”

He looks around. “Where do we go?”

I smile. “We'll pick it up. What do you like?”

“Jelly is lunch. Sometimes we have peanut butter with the jelly.”

“Is that what you want or just what you eat?” Fuck he looks nervous. “How about we go and you can pick what you want?”

“Me and Prince like cheeseburgers. Trapper likes chicken sandwiches or a turkey grinder and Jax likes a Whopper or Italian. Right?” Alex says making this easy.

“That's right Alex, we get the things we like and we're all different.”

He looks like he doesn't believe me. “I like when we have Bologna and hot dogs, but it's not lunch food.”

“Let's go see what they have. Do you like McDonald’s or Burger King?” I take his hand and walk him out, at the truck I look down, he never answered. “Brandon?”

He's got tears in his eyes. “Is Daddy all better?”

Fuck. “No buddy. He's not.”

“He brings McDonald’s when he's back. I don't want McDonald’s.”

What a fuckin’ thing to connect with. “No McDonald’s. Let's get grinders.” I sit him in the middle and buckle him in.

“What's that?” Fuckin’ cute kid.

“A sandwich. Whatever kind you want, if they have it, they'll make it for you.”

“Okay.”

At the Deli I pull him out watching his right arm. He's got a bruise on it that looks painful. He's all excited and runs up to the case. I wait in line watching him and answer his questions. People give me looks and I give them back. When it's our turn Kiesha puts my regular order up and asks if I want anything else.

I lift Brandon and ask what he wants. “The pink meat and cheese.”

“Ham and cheese?”

“Okay.”

I laugh. “You want lettuce or tomatoes?” He gives a weird look. “Just plain.” Kiesha nods smiling. She makes him a little lunch bag with an apple and a cookie in it. I sign and put him down. He's holding his bag proud. I smile picking up our food and put my hand out.

“Thanks Jax.” He hasn't even eaten. I throw him chin not knowing if I'm supposed to say you're welcome for a bag.

We get back and sit in the break room eating. He seems surprised to sit with us, but we don't say anything and he eats.

Vinny runs Sheila's bike up to Security and I start on a new one. Brandon is happy to play in the trike.
